AS Performance Mocks this week

Availability of Music Rooms for using Sibelius
The Music Room (upstairs) is available for private study at the following times:
Monday 10.00-12.45
Tuesday 14.10-15.05
Wednesday 08.45-10.00
Friday 08.45-10.00; 14.10-15.05
In addition you are welcome to work quietly on compositions at the side of the room but not at the following times:
Wednesday 10.00-11.15
Thursday 10.00-12.45
Friday 10.00-11.15
The Study room is available for private study except for at the following times.
Wednesday 10.00-11.15
Thursday 10.00-12.45
Friday 10.00-11.15
Music Enrichment Update
- Choir (Tuesday 10.00), Chamber Choir (Friday 14.10), Wind Band (Monday 15.05) and Orchestra (Wednesday 08:45) are now up and running
- There is a meeting NEXT Monday at 12:50 for all those interested in smaller Classical chamber groups (please email me if you cannot come)
- Iain will be emailing about Year 12 Band auditions later this week
- Folk Group and other student-led enrichment groups are finishing auditions this week and will soon be up and running

Starting Points
On Tuesday I will take in Exercise 13
Please submit bars 9-18 of the Starting Points Quartet composition exercise as a Sibelius file on AS Moodle by the end of WEDNESDAY (under Weekly Submissions – attach the Sibelius file and make sure you click on submit when you are done)
Vocal set works
Create a Coggle for Locus Iste that we started in class:
- Use this Coggle Template (or adapt the one you started). You will need a Google/Gmail account to do this
- Look at the GSMIRTH Short Guide in your handbooks to help you
- You must add at least two features of the music per category
- Either email me a PDF of your Coggle before the lesson or bring a print-off to hand in
- You will find performances of Bruckner’s Locus Iste on Youtube

AS Homework – w/c 1st September
- Short History of Music Follow-up task (due on Monday for G group and Tuesday for F Group)
- Create a Google account if you do not already have one
- Follow the http://www.alevelmusic.com blog (top of this page)
- Make sure you have all relevant dates from your handbook in your diaries and those of your parents/guardians
- Sign up for some CBSO concerts across the year
- Make sure you have a folder and at least 5 dividers just for music
- Complete your Unit 1 Initial Proposals form
Student Voice: You said … we did …
At several points throughout the year we respond to student suggestions made through various channels. These action points are following up comments made in the QDP survey in the spring and the subject focus group sessions. If you have suggestions at any point in the year, please do feel free to make them either in person, by email or by popping an anonymous note in our new suggestions box in the top corridor.

Last week of term homeworks
Composition
Ensure your final composition work submitted onto Moodle by the end of Wednesday if you are in D group and Thursday if you are in A group. We will take these submissions into consideration in September in the event of students doing poorly in the AS Music. If you have not made an effort with this project it will count against you.

| The UK premiere of the British composer James MacMillan’s St Luke Passion. MacMillan’s music is by turns haunting, dramatic and magical, so this setting of the Easter story should be a real treat. Britten’s Serenade is an reflective and beautiful twentieth century classic.

| A colourful programme of music inspired by Spain, ending with Ravel’s famous Bolero. Taking the baton is Spanish conductor Josep Pons, who should lend an authentic flavour to the orchestra’s playing.

| Wednesday 11th February | Shostakovich – Symphony No. 11 (including introductory talk) | 150211 Letter | |
| Shostakovich’s Eleventh Symphony is one of his most accessible, depicting scenes from the Russian revolution in a dramatic, almost filmic way. The music moves between cold menace, brutal drama and lament, and was an immediate success both in the USSR and abroad.

| Mahler’s epic Sixth Symphony is full of dramatic contrast, ending with a brutally tragic fff. Berg’s Three Pieces is much lighter in tone, but no less colourful, ranging from grotesque parody to the extreme chaos of parts of the last movement.
