Orchestral Example (D02) Wagner

Wagner Flying Dutchman

An heroic opening! Notice the following features that you might steal:

  • High open fifths in the upper strings and woodwind (D and A) leaves lots of space to develop the texture around them
  • Unison horn fanfares are always stirring!
  • The rising chromatic scale in the basses and cellos build the tension
  • It lands on a fully scored diminished seventh at the end of the second page. Notice how after than the bare fifths and scales etc. alternate with more chordal textures.
