Year 12 Half Term Homework

Revision and Review

Review both the first and third movements of the Haydn. You should use the resources on Moodle including the annotated scores, blank scores for testing yourself and the quizzes. I expect everyone to have done at least one quiz on each movement as a minimum. There will be a test in your first SINGLE lesson of the week.

Compile notes on Topic B – First movements and Sonata form. There will be a timed essay in your LAST lesson of the week. Use the Essay Topic Summary (B) revision frame document to help you.

Year 12 HW w/c 4th February

Composition (due Friday 15th February for both groups)

This week your task is to finish your first movement as follows:

Sonata form OVERVIEW (download table showing whole structure)

Notes on Codas at bottom of WCT Fingerprints page (PDF here)

  1. Make corrections and improvements
  2. Chords and features must be labelled
  3. You must have DYNAMICS and ARTICULATION
  4. After your second subject in the dominant you need to write a Codetta (we will look at this later in the week) in the DOMINANT
  5. For your recap, the minimum is to copy and paste your first subject as is, change your transition so it stays in the tonic then copy and paste the first part of your first subject again (preferably with some small instrumention or other changes)
  6. Adapt your Codetta so it is a Coda to finish in the TONIC (again we will look at this later in the week)

Year 12 Homework w/c 28th

Preparation for Haydn 104 test next week on Monday (A) / Tuesday (B)

Composition (due A: Monday 4th / B: Wednesday 6th)

  • Make corrections
  • Join up your development into a continuous section that contains the following new sections
    • an ending section that is 8 bars of dominant pedal (use these chords)  in the original key to lead onto your recapitulation. Before your dominant pedal you should have an augmented sixth
    • a passage of EITHER parallel 3rds, 6ths, 10ths or parallel first inversions (between any of the existing three sections of the development already written but NOT first or last) – see help here
  • Transpose your first subject idea into the dominant and paste it in after your transition

Year 12 Homework w/c 21st January

Composition (due A: Monday 28th / B: Wednesday 30th)

  1. Do corrections
  2. Write a transition which should be as follows:
  • A 6-8 bar passage that follows the pivot chord progression from the Haydn so it should go as follows (this can be based on existing or new material but must continue from the tonic noise that you have already written):
    • In home key: IV6 / which is in dominant key I6 – vii6 [then you can carry on for a few bars in the new key] – note the red is a pivot chord (V6=I6 in new key)
  • 6 or more bars of dominant pedal in the new key (use these chords) which will lead into your second subject.

3. Put all your sketches in ONE Sibelius file as follows:

  • 16-bar compound period
  • Tonic Noise
  • Transition
  • GAP
  • Development sketch 1
  • GAP
  • Development sketch 2

Year 12 Homework (w/c 7th January)

Composition (due A: Thursday 17th / B: Friday 18th)

  1. Make corrections to 16-bar phrase from last term according to feedback on Moodle
  2. Write a circle of fifths based on a fragment of your idea. You must:
    1. write it in a closely related minor key to your tonic
    2. write a melodic idea that spans TWO chords (i.e. I – IV) then sequence this idea down by step to create the circle of fifths
    3. in  a minor key circle of fifths you should not raise the seventh in III (and you can decide whether to or not for vii)
  3. Write a 6-8 bar idea in which you pass a (modified) fragment of the melody from the 16-bar phrase between a higher and a lower instrument (like on the first page of the development of the Haydn 104 first movement). This should be in a closely related key.

Year 12 Homework w/c 10th December

Revision

You need to revise for a test at the beginning of next week on the THIRD movement.

Annotate your Haydn third movement scores using the notes and annotated score on Moodle. There are also some quizzes on Moodle to help you practice.

Composition (BOTH GROUPS FOR END OF MONDAY PLEASE)

Write a 16-bar theme (ending on I at the beginning of the 17th bar) for strings in the same key, time signature and tempo as your tonic filler homework. You can have a woodwind doubling instrument on the melody if you like. It needs to be as follows:

  • 4-bar theme (include simple, triadic and scalic ideas which will work well for development)
  • 4-bar idea that ends on I-V imperfect cadence
  • Exact repeat of 4-bar theme

Adapt bars 5-8 so that they end on a PERFECT cadence (use ii6 or a cadential 6/4 as well). The perfect cadence will land on the beginning of the next bar (bar 17)

Year 12 Homework w/c 3rd December

Composition (for Monday A / Wednesday B)
Write about 8 bars of tonic noise (tutti and loud) according to the following parameters:

  • Instrumentation should be at least ‘a 8’: Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Cello and Bass (playing the same thing), 2 horns (on the same line) and 2 oboes or flutes PLUS timpani. You may add other woodwind and brass if you wish
  • It must have a tonic pedal and some suitable chords with/against it (list of chords here)
  • You should also include at least a few of:
    • tutti tonic chords
    • short, repetitive phrases
    • some octave unison
    • rising thirds against the pedal
    • repeated notes rather than held pedal
  • Start and end on the tonic chord
  • It is all about gesture and energy rather than writing a nice tune

AoS A

Annotate your Haydn third movement scores using the notes and annotated score on Moodle.

Year 12 Homework w/c 26th November

Work set last week for this week

Composition – dominant pedal for minuet – see last week for detailed instructions

Work set for next week

Composition – B section (blank 6 bars – can be anything from 4-12 bars)

Do corrections and DEVELOP TEXTURE (i.e. adapt some of the simple textures you have to fit to the models offered here: minuet textures)

Start in the relative minor (or that of the dominant – see below)

There are TWO main options

1.Write a melodic idea (either based on your original or not) and then sequence down a tone (like the in the Trio of Stamitz LMG) OR

2.Write a brief circle of fifths round to the dominant (if you want to go a bit further then start B section in relative minor of dominant)

THEN you need to arrive on the dominant pedal you have either written. You should either

1.land on your dominant pedal from an augmented sixth a semitone above it OR

2.land on V FIRST then add in an augmented sixth that resolves onto your dominant pedal

Essay revision

Make notes on Topic D (Third movements). Use Essay Topic Summary (D)this handout as the basis for your notes and use the development of the symphony pages to do your research. In the end you will have to write a short essay on how third movements have developed in the history of the symphony, with some examples taken from all periods and a short paragraph on Haydn 104. We will have a brief discussion on this topic in the first single lesson of next week and a timed essay in the first double.

Year 12 Homework w/c 19th November

Homework from last week

Essay Homework – due Monday (A) / Tuesday (B)

Write a short essay on the development of the orchestra in symphonic music from 1750-1900. Use the list of pieces on the organiser given out in class to guide your research on the development of the symphony web page.  You could also read the introductory section of the Rhinegold Study Guide.

Your essay must then be structured as followed, keeping symphonies in chronological order:

  • Introduction (include explanation of basso continuo and transition from Baroque to Classical)
  • Explain a few examples of early Classical pieces
  • Brief mention of Haydn 104 (you can look at the score and notes on Moodle in the Year 12 Revision guide). You should use this as an example of the mature classical orchestra but mention the restrictions of natural brass etc.
  • Explain a few examples of early and then late Romantic pieces
  • Brief conclusion pointing out the major changes.

Work set for next week
Composition

  • Correct your 8-bar modulating period according to feedback and then add a quartet texture taken from the simple quartet textures on the WCT Hub. This will be the FIRST eight bars of your piece
  • For the LAST eight bars of your piece you need to rewrite the period so that it has no secondary dominant and does not modulate. Make sure you finish with an idiomatic cadence like I6/4 V I or ii6 – V – I and end on the FIRST beat of the EIGHTH bar
  • For at least four bars before this write a dominant pedal that will lead into it you must use some of the dissonant and chromatic harmonies discussed in class (from the WCT Fingerprints page)
  • Leave a gap of six bars or so before, so the whole structure will be:
    • Modulating period
    • 6 blank bars
    • dominant pedal with harmonies over it
    • Modified non modulating period
