Revision and Review

Review both the first and third movements of the Haydn. You should use the resources on Moodle including the annotated scores, blank scores for testing yourself and the quizzes. I expect everyone to have done at least one quiz on each movement as a minimum. There will be a test in your first SINGLE lesson of the week.

Compile notes on Topic B – First movements and Sonata form. There will be a timed essay in your LAST lesson of the week. Use the Essay Topic Summary (B) revision frame document to help you.

Listen to your performance on Moodle and fill in the boxes on the feedback form. Please hand the printed version in by the end of FRIDAY. I will put a tray out but you can hand it in during your lesson.

Unit 3

Please review the Haydn from the point of view of ALL essay topics for next week. There will be tests and review activities.

Composition (due Friday 15th February for both groups)

This week your task is to finish your first movement as follows:

1. Make corrections and improvements
2. Chords and features must be labelled
3. You must have DYNAMICS and ARTICULATION
4. After your second subject in the dominant you need to write a Codetta (we will look at this later in the week) in the DOMINANT
5. For your recap, the minimum is to copy and paste your first subject as is, change your transition so it stays in the tonic then copy and paste the first part of your first subject again (preferably with some small instrumention or other changes)
6. Adapt your Codetta so it is a Coda to finish in the TONIC (again we will look at this later in the week)

Preparation for Haydn 104 test next week on Monday (A) / Tuesday (B)

• Use the annotated score on Moodle to annotate fully your own score
• Do at least one of the Movement 1 quizzes on the Music A Level Common Resources Moodle

Composition (due A: Monday 4th / B: Wednesday 6th)

• Make corrections
• Join up your development into a continuous section that contains the following new sections
  • an ending section that is 8 bars of dominant pedal (use these chords)  in the original key to lead onto your recapitulation. Before your dominant pedal you should have an augmented sixth
  • a passage of EITHER parallel 3rds, 6ths, 10ths or parallel first inversions (between any of the existing three sections of the development already written but NOT first or last) – see help here
• Transpose your first subject idea into the dominant and paste it in after your transition

1. Do corrections
2. Write a transition which should be as follows:

• A 6-8 bar passage that follows the pivot chord progression from the Haydn so it should go as follows (this can be based on existing or new material but must continue from the tonic noise that you have already written):
  • In home key: I – V6 / which is in dominant key I6 – vii6 – I [then you can carry on for a few bars in the new key] – note the red is a pivot chord (V6=I6 in new key)
• 6 or more bars of dominant pedal in the new key (use these chords) which will lead into your second subject.

3. Put all your sketches in ONE Sibelius file as follows:

• 16-bar compound period
• Tonic Noise
• Transition
• GAP
• Development sketch 1
• GAP
• Development sketch 2

Composition (due A: Thursday 17th / B: Friday 18th)

1. Make corrections to 16-bar phrase from last term according to feedback on Moodle
2. Write a circle of fifths based on a fragment of your idea. You must:
   1. write it in a closely related minor key to your tonic
   2. write a melodic idea that spans TWO chords (i.e. I – IV) then sequence this idea down by step to create the circle of fifths
   3. in  a minor key circle of fifths you should not raise the seventh in III (and you can decide whether to or not for vii)
3. Write a 6-8 bar idea in which you pass a (modified) fragment of the melody from the 16-bar phrase between a higher and a lower instrument (like on the first page of the development of the Haydn 104 first movement). This should be in a closely related key.
