A2 (D) Homework set w/c 20th October

Instrumental

Complete the essay task ‘Compare and contrast the use of melody and rhythm in Corelli, Haydn and Beethoven set works’.
You must hand in your essay with the cover sheet ready for a peer-marking exercise after half term.

Use the musical models chosen last lesson to generate ideas for your composition.
Compose your initial idea, ensuring that you have around 40 seconds of music ready for the first lesson after half term (7 November).

AS (G) Homework w/c 20th October

Instrumental (due Tuesday after Half term)

Essay: Identify features of the Poulenc that are typical of the Neo-Classical Style

1) Read the revision notes on Moodle (1 and 2 in the Poulenc Folder)

2) Review and improve your essay planner sheet

3) Write an essay which makes at least ten points (illustrated with bar numbered references wherever possible). You will need to discuss what is Classical and what is more unexpected (the Neo bit of Neo-Classical)

Vocal

Make sure that the annotations in your Faure and Van Morrison pieces are up to date and that you are familiar with these works. We will start next half term with a quick review of both your knowledge and annotations.

Composition

Decide which brief you are going to do

Recommended: The River’s Journey
Alternative: Piece based on a mobile ringtone
Vocal options – not recommended if you intend to study music at A2

Find at least two pieces on Moodle and two further pieces from which you can take inspiration for your piece and fill in a ‘Composition Initial Influences Tracker’
Complete a ‘Structure Planner’

Write a piece for string quartet in which one note is sustained in the either the second violin or viola throughout. You need to show some specific things you have stolen from the Purcell and Cornelius using the notes features of Sibelius (go to the Review tab). The piece should:

  • be in ternary form
  • use some texture ideas from the Purcell
  • use some chord ideas from the Cornelius
  • use a variety of chords both consonant and dissonant that fit with your note

I recommend that you use a dominant pedal.

Complete the Must section of the Van Morrison Learning Tasks

Composition

1. Finish adding transformations to your A3 motif sheet, including some which transform and vary the original motif quite strongly (e.g. By combining aspects such as inversion and fragmentation)
2. Write a monophonic piece based on the A3 motif sheet according to the following criteria:

It should be around a minute long
It must be based on transformations of your motif – which can be transposed to any pitch
It must have lots of articulation and dynamics to make it really bold

Composition

Write a monophonic piece based on the A3 motif sheet according to the following criteria:

  • It should be around a minute long
  • It must be based on transformations of your motif – which can be transposed to any pitch
  • It must have lots of articulation and dynamics to make it really bold
