Please continue with your composition work. I am really happy to see students in workshops or 1-to-1 but please make sure you book in advance. I will next take your work in in two weeks time and would like you please to annotate your feedback sheet for the next hand-in on Friday 4th March.
Spring Term Chorale Work
All students will complete Edexcel Papers 2014 and 2o12 this half term and then do 2011 over the Easter break. You are welcome and encouraged to do extra ones – 2006, 2008 and 2013 are already printed out in the classroom and others are available on Moodle (pre 2008 tend to be a bit trickier). We will look at your work in seminar groups according to the following schedule.
Notes: please use the Chorale Completion Cribsheet and be religious about checking Sop/Bass for parallels before doing inner parts and then writing the notes for each chord and ticking them off.

Write an essay comparing the Bach, Haydn AND Webern in terms of Structure and Harmony. Note that this essay will be out of 26 rather than 18, to reflect the fact that you have an extra work to consider.

Finish Cadence Worksheet 11 that we started in class. All V4-3 suspensions unless it is impossible (it is for one of them!)

Please complete an essay on the following title: “Identify features of the Webern that are typical of Modernism”. You will need to use the planner we completed in class and you should of course use the notes on Moodle from Edexcel and other sources. Due in FRIDAY 12th

Continue with your composition but please indicate clearly in the submission text where you have created motivic links between sections. I will be concentrating on this aspect.

Please complete the 2005 chorale mock using the bassline we agree in class. You can alter it, however, as much as you like. Please check REALLY carefully for Double SLAP problems
Instrumental
1. Listen to the Brahms Quintet and annotate your score with any repetitions of motifs a, b and c. We’ll do a peer check in class on Wednesday!
2. Read the background information in your Brahms workpack. Make a note of anything you don’t understand
3. Write a detailed paragraph about Brahms’s use of structure and tonality in the Quintet.

What innovative compositional techniques does Schoenberg use to express the emotional content of the text in Der kranke Mond from Pierrot Lunaire.

Complete the bass line of the 2005 chorale. Make sure modulations are right and that there are no parallels etc. DON’T DO THE INNER PARTS.

Use the notes made in class to add to your anthology and mind map (you should have taken a photo of the class notes)
Dig out your November essay ‘ Compare the use of texture and instrumentation in the Bach, Holborne and Ellington set works’. Add a section at the end of this essay on the Miles Davis. It can be in bullet points if you wish but MUST be detailed with specific examples
