A2 Easter Homework
Instrumental Use your notes from class to write a mini essay comparing the use of tonality in two of the set works. Work will be shared in the first lesson back after Easter – give as much detail as possible.
Applied and listening
- Revise all of your Applied set works. We will be doing recall and timed-essay work after Easter. You need to learn FEATURES of the works that can help support whatever you are arguing.
- Do at least three extra listening exercises on Moodle. Some are in your red books and there are some other extras as well. The more you do the better.
Chorale
Compulsory chorale 2011 – on Moodle if you lose it (optional chorales 2004 & 2010 – also on Moodle)
AS Easter homework
Composition
Question 1 and Cover Sheet pro forma to help you prepare for these elements of composition.
Both these due in the first day back from Easter
Anthology
When you return we will be doing a variety of knowledge-testing activities around comparison, context and information useful for skeleton scores
- Learn all the comparison questions
- Learn the key context points
- Revise using the revision pack and annotated anthologies – you need to know these pieces like the back of your hand
- Practice answering comparison questions across all four pieces and check your answers in the revision pack
Harmony
Complete the 2011 questions 4 and 5 given out in class (I have given out the wrong music for Q5 – here is the right one)

Piece of the week (March 16th)
This week’s piece (requested by Sophie and Laura Jeffs) is by American/British composer Stephen Montague, whose best pieces blend (tongue-in-cheek) experimentalism with a sense of theatre. This piece for wind quintet dispenses with the main body of all the instruments leaving players just with their reeds and mouthpieces. Montague explores the dramatic and sonic possibilities of this very fully in this short piece.
